Land Collioure Le Coq

My dedication to the environment has always been strong and I owe this to the place where I grew up, my home, Otter Creek Ranch. Below is a short piece describing my desire to help protect the environment.

The faded grey mailbox with nine rusted bullet holes stands slightly off balance and adjacent to the old cattle guard marking the start of a meandering dirt road to Otter Creek Ranch, my home and an environment that has inspired me with a passion for life.
Through willows speckled with hues of red, orange and yellow, this bumpy road to our home not only serves as a path for our truck, but also for the white-faced Herford cattle that often refuse to move even with the blow of our horn.
Moving deeper into the valley, sagebrush covered hills evolve into large, lush meadows rimed with small fishponds. Tall grass tickles the stomach of Punch, our neighbor’s small cattle dog, as he darts from his hiding place and bites the backs of our tires as he herds us towards home and through the many gates that my younger sister and I often argue as to whose turn it is to open and close.
Thirty-two miles from the nearest town, this ranch is a sanctuary from a chaotic world.  I find myself secluded in a Colorado valley beneath mountains that resemble a sleeping Indian, with peaks that descend upon acres of undisturbed wilderness I call my backyard.
Within the borders of this magical place the real me shines, a young woman motivated by this vast and pristine open space to influence others about the importance of a sustainable world. Not only a piece of land, Otter Creek has given me the opportunity to embrace a different foundation that will forever influence and determine my future. I have gained the curiosity necessary to go beyond the boundaries of my own comfort zone and to protect other environments similar to the one most special to me. My primary goals in life originate from the seemingly simple, yet complex realities of a life lived with an appreciation for nature.
The environmental issues and problems we face can be solved with the fierce determination to make a difference. I care for nature too much to sit back and let the modern world rob its beauty and take its resources for granted. I want to keep nature intact for generations to come so that others will be able to experience a natural world, as inspiring and unspoiled as the one that has impacted my life so greatly.
Much like how the geese are eager to begin their thousand-mile journey south after a four month stay at Otter Creek Ranch, I too am excited to learn and acquire skills and knowledge that will allow me to help make a difference. I am excited about every opportunity to protect what I love. Of all its many gifts, this special place has cleared a path for me in life based on an appreciation for the land, which also happens to be my name.
